To me that mean the devs did a great job of building that relationship, which is pretty incredible considering it's done over a short period of time exclusively through voice communication. Ultimately Delilah accepts that for what it is but the player doesn't want to accept it. It was a distraction from their lives outside this isolated situation. Most of that can essentially be applied to the relationship and ending moments with Delilah as well. Throughout the entire game your character is trying to escape and the game creates this intriguing story to make that possible, but ultimately it slaps him with a "nope, this is just normal life." The snap back to reality is the intended emotion the developers wanted, but I can totally understand how that may have turned some people off from the story overall. And that feels a bit like something was taken away from you, but I think that's exactly how you're supposed to feel. It's not some conspiracy or ghost story or stalker situation, it's just a relatively reasonable explanation of something bad that happened. But when the "reveal" is made, it brings the player (and the character) back to reality. I was also someone who, like others here, wanted there to be some sort of conspiracy or weird shit going on. They very much set up a mystery that you want to keep playing to solve. It's all very eerie and it appears there's really some strange things going on. I agree that the plot is driven by the suspense. Your character begins the game quite literally as a way to escape his current situation and that's made even more clear later on in the game. Seems like the story is what is rubbing most people the wrong way, so my take on that is this (spoilers, obviously):įirewatch is a game about real life, real emotions, and real relationships. Again, I have no idea what kind of story the devs want to tell you.Īll in all, a frustrating experience for all the wrong reasons, and I expected more after having downloaded this off a list that ranked this as one of the best games on Game pass. It falls flat after having built up suspense. I don't understand what the devs wanted you to feel. The game's ending and so called plot twist is non-existent, which is actually the only thing I'll remember it for. I kept giving her non-flirty answers throughout. I just wasn't interested in that sort of thing. Indeed this is what some players wrote on the Firewatch subreddit, so I guess it worked. But it is clear from the first moment that the game assumes you're gonna want a relationship with Delilah, or at least get closer to her. The realistic voice-overs from the game's two main characters also helps immensely. There's underlying tension almost all the time, and that is what drives the game forward. The plot itself works as long as there is suspense, which is actually for most of the game. Because the passable terrain is so unintuitive and hard to read, having the map up almost all the time is mandatory, and it's tedious having to close it down just in order to be able to run. There are places in the forest that are blocked that literally look easier to get past than some of the rock climbs the player actually can do elsewhere on the map.Īnd the map itself? You need to have it up pretty often, and while you do, running is disabled. I understand it's not that type of freedom granting game, but please make it more visually intuitive why you can't pass a certain area. The first thing that stands out as frustrating is the game's invisible borders across the map. It's a short enough game, and I knew it was, so I stuck through it even though I can't say I was really enjoying it. I got this off game pass on Xbox last week and finished it pretty quickly. If I had to sum this game up in one word it would be: Pretentious. Please use flair to display what games you’re currently playing, not a punch line, username, tag, URL, or signature.
